Spain's e-bike market grew significantly for the second consecutive year

The Spanish e-bike market grew significantly for the second consecutive year. e-bike sales increased by 28.3% to over 140,000 units in 2019, with the average retail unit price rising by 11% to just over €2,400, well above the price Spaniards have been paying for regular bikes.

Electric bicycles accounted for 11.3% of the total 1.261 million units in the Spanish bicycle market in 2019. The e-bike market has expanded rapidly over the past few years, reaching 54.5% in 2018. And 2019 data shows a steady growth trend for e-bikes. The Spanish Bicycle Industry Association (AMBE) provided the data for this survey.AMBE consists of 38 major Spanish bicycle manufacturers, importers and distributors, which together hold 54% of the Spanish bicycle market. There are approximately 2,951 bicycle brick-and-mortar stores in Spain, a slight decrease in numbers, with 319 bicycle brands sold last year, eight fewer than in 2018.

The total value of sales of bicycles (including e-bikes and bicycles) increased by 9.27% from €1.7 billion in 2018 to almost €1.9 billion in 2019. In terms of value, bicycles are the most important sporting goods market in Spain, with a market share of 24.6%. In 2019, total bicycle sales even accounted for 46.09% of the retail sporting goods market. In previous years, this percentage was 43.8%. The second largest item in the retail market is the bicycle equipment category, which accounts for 30.47%, including textiles and helmets, and this segment accounts for 16.76% of the retailer's revenue.

The sales of e-bikes in Spain increased significantly, with the overall market growing by 20.41% to 1.26 million units, from 1.05 million units in 2018. In addition, mountain bikes grew by 16.3% to 475,000 units and children's bikes by 45.3% to 478,000 units. The average retail price of mountain bikes fell by 5% to €699, mainly because many customers switched from regular mountain bikes to the more expensive electric mountain bikes.

AMBE is concerned about the trend of urban bikes. After years of growth in this category, sales of just 93,000 units in 2019 were down 24.2% year-on-year, while the average retail price rose 15.2%, with increased sales of e-bikes pulling up the average retail price.
